New DVDs!

We just bought Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, and Kiki's Delivery Service, thus giving our Studio Ghibli collection a huge boost (we already own Princess Mononoke). Next in my sights are My Neighbor Totoro and (if I can find it) the Lupin the 3rd movie Miyazaki did, the name of which escapes me now.

Also picked up the soundtrack to Chicago. The film was much, much better than the current Broadway run, at least when I saw it. It's a great soundtrack. Now I'm trying to figure out how to scan to my laptop... Paul, any suggestions? :) I'm not sure the ol' Canon's drivers will work, and I tried to download new ones from the Canon site, but it turned out to be a plugin for Photoshop 7. D'oh.

OS X Drivers for CanoScan N1220U: Canon doesn't have any, but "VuePrint" from www.hamrick.com works great under OS X, and supports that scanner and a lot of others. Great stuff, $40 shareware, I love it. (Free version prints "$40" all over your scans, ha ha.)

It hadn't even crossed my mind to look for third-party software -- I assumed the solution would have to come from Apple or Canon. VueScan is a really nice-looking little program, and seems to do everything I might need. Those dollar sign watermarks are probaby the best registration-insurance I've seen yet in a demo/shareware program. :)

Yeah, I guess coming from the UNIX side of things I begin to expect that the OS does the basic minimum to help you out, and everything else is handled by a third party extension or application. This is probably not the case anymore, but I still expect it :)
